Observations on Christianity

Psychologists say it’s easier to find fault in others than in oneself, and I agree. As a Christian, I can’t help but notice some of the odd, annoying, and downright aggravating quirks of my fellow believers. This post began as a rant about those issues, but I realized while writing it that I’m only furthering the cause of those who claim religion has no place in the modern world. As such, I present just a small part of the things I hate–and love–about American Christian culture.

4 Things I Hate About Christian Culture

  1. Whenever I ask for worship music I get a male soprano with a guitar playing the same 4 chords with some artfully-descriptive variation of the lyrics "I love you."
  2. "What Would Jesus Do?" is more important than "What Has Jesus Called Me To Do?"
  3. Missions is defined as either (a) sending money to an overseas charity or (b) sightseeing on the church budget.
  4. "The Performing Arts are a wonderful part of God’s creativity–except theatre, film, or modern dance, of course.  *shudder* I thought you were just talking about music…"

5 Things I Love About Christian Culture

  1. Absolute truth still exists, and 2+2 still equals 4.
  2. My family actually has values that they teach me are right, rather than assuming I’ll find a special, personal morality on my own.
  3. Christmas plays include religious significance.
  4. Mel Gibson (aw come on, you know you do too).
  5. In almost 2000 years of Christian teaching, and earlier still countless millenia of Judaic belief, there remains a remnant–more than that, a large body of believers–in Jehovah, the Ancient of Days.
