Au Revoir, Blogger!

The wonderful people over at Six Apart have finally released Typepad, which may become the backbone of Talkabout. Right now I’m taking it for a trial run; provided everything works out, it will become my new best friend. Thanks guys!

Spot The Benefactors

Microsoft and AOL settle browser wars for $750,000,000

Instead of using their courtroom stint to begin competing legally through pricing and quality like most respectable businesses, MS has secured its own bloated monopoly and that of AOL Time Warner. But then, when have either of these two monolithic corporations ever held their customers’ interests in mind?

Amazon Ups The Usability

A couple of weeks back I placed an order at Amazon and got discouraged at the amount of pages I had to sort through to complete the process. Today I expected the same, but lo! a new ordering system was in place that put all the information and important decisions (shipping, gift certificates, receipt) on one page. Needless to say, their new efficiency made this customer extremely happy.

The New Space Race?

It’s about time someone issued a challenge to the NASA monopoly. Although they’ve done a good job getting us to this point, the realm of space is ripe for public exploration. But maybe that’s just the sci-fi geek inside me.

Tidying Up The Place

Went bug-squashing today, fixed the contact form and kept the site from going to pieces in Mozilla. Still not pretty, but I’m working on it.

Brand-Spankin New

There’s a new Talkabout in town, and it’s looking pretty spiffy. There were a lot of reasons for the redesign, but these were the key issues addressed:

  • Faster loading time
  • Streamlined code
  • Experimental layout
  • Fixed contact form

This isn’t the final draft of the new design, though, and I hope to progressively tweak things as time goes by. What do you think?

The New Look of UPS

UPS has updated their popular logo, to the chagrin of many designers. They are also preparing to launch a new site. Following in a recent designing in public trend, they’re giving users a chance to preview the new design. The real question here is the inevitable comparison to FedEx.

(Hat tip: Ordinary Life) … that’s a lot of links.

Random Considerations

Sitting here, eating lunch, I realized something technology is really weird. We drive an hour to a city that would’ve taken a day trip 100 years ago; we fly thousands of miles in the air, higher than any natural bird; heck, I work at a job that makes me look at a box all day.

Weird… but cool.

Leaving the MSN Browser

Considering MSN’s turn into a paid service, I’m slowly weaning myself off the rather cutsey interface and back into MSIE 6. The integration of email was the only reason I began using the browser, but even that has changed. Hotmail, once simple and pure, has finally been bloated by Microsoft’s never-ending search for financial gain — even the (relatively) new site design is nothing more than a ploy to display more ads, more often.

Music Selections Sidebar

I finally got the new Music Selections sidebar working; it’s a combination of Oddsock’s Do Something plugin for Winamp 2 and a little javascript. Now, if only it would work with the newest version of Winamp…

Update: Each time I add a post, Blogger reverts back to the old template (sans music selections). Hopefully they’ll take care of this soon.
