Introducing SS 2.0
Posted by David | Filed under Technology
Has it already been a week? Or longer, actually…
Surreal Studios 2.0 is now up, a skeleton for what will hopefully be filled with some interesting content (whenever I get the chance to work on it further).
Also, Training Day has been critiqued, for your viewing pleasure.
Spotting Stupid Usability #1

Okay, when you’re trying to open a file, what Microsoft designer thought it’d be a great idea to stick the “New Folder” icon next to the “Open Folder” icon? In the last year alone, I have created over a million new folders while trying to navigate through my computer.
A simple fix for this problem would be to switch the “List Options” icon with “New Folder”, thereby putting more space between the two similiar folders.

Managing Your Library

Speaking of ingenious, take a gander at Singlefile — a web application designed to manage your book collection. Some people will balk at the idea of needing to organize their books, but as an avid reader, I need a system like this. For example, I’m headed to college this fall and won’t be able to take every book I own; Singlefile records what books I’ve left behind, and who with. In 4 years, I’ll be able to get those books back without missing any of them (provided my sis keeps tabs on them). Kudos to the 37signals team for once again (this time with partner Spinfree) making a useful, worthwhile site.
Thanks to Jason Kottke for the heads up.
Spotting Real-Life Usability #1

When you open the door of your car, an alarm warns you that your lights are still on. This is a simple but ingenious design feature that has saved countless numbers of people thousands of dollars.
YACCS on the Loose

I’ve finally gotten a new Comments system up and running, based off the wonderful service from YACCS. Try it out!
Good Idea, Bad Idea

Is it just me, or is putting Microsoft products in a car really safe? A company known for the sheer amount of bugs and crashes in its operating systems should not be allowed to tamper with anything even possibly dangerous.
You can bet my daughter won’t be driving one.
Deep Fried Live!

I think all food should be a challenge to eat. Just as our ancestors* had to chase down and spear wild saber-tooth tigers, so should we be forced to fend off the tentacles of wild calimari or wrestle rabid chickens to the ground. Imagine how much more satisfying dinnertime would be, knowing that you went into the fray and once again came out, slightly bruised, but ultimately the champion. Then again, maybe it’s just a guy thing.
* Yeah, right
Code Tweaks

I’ve removed the collapse function from the menu to your right, seeing as it’s a bit more annoying than cool (and it doesn’t really serve any purpose).
Update: Apparently when removing the aforementioned code, I messed some other things up. They’re fixed now. I think.
SimGolf is Here!

Finally, another cool release from Maxis is here! I love the Sim line of games, particularly SimCity. This one doesn’t seem as detailed as the others, but it’s still addicting to play. Ironically, this beat out SimMars and SimsVille to be released first. Will the other two ever be released? Who knows…
